In nature Euphorbia horrida can reach up to 1 meter in height, for stems 15 cm in diameter on which we can distinguish 12 to 16 more or less wavy and well separated ribs. The thorns are actually sterile peduncles green at the base and then reddish-brown which, when dry, become stiff and dark brown. These spines can be solitary or clustered and reach a maximum of 4 cm in length. Solitary greenish-yellow flowers appear in summer.

The culture of Euphorbia horrida is quite easy: it can even tolerate short frosts if kept dry. It can only be planted in the ground in the South of France in a warm and sheltered situation.
